Bloody hell, I was at that one! You could drink in public in those days, and me and the other half worked our way through a six-pack of McEwan's, which was much nicer than it sounds. As indeed was the experience of listening to Wet Wet Wet.
🤣 Pellow was King Of The World that day. Think it might’ve actually been 1987, when they were at the peak of their fame. And they did a free gig in solidarity with public sector workers. Always had a sneaking admiration for them ever since.
Those gigs in small towns by old music stars are always a special thing - like tinsel curtains in working men’s clubs. Saw The Drifters and Edwin Starr in my hometown of Ross-on-Wye - surreal experience.
Erm...Half Man Half Biscuit at the Mechanics. I apologise...
That deserves an article all its own, a memorable evening. Confusing in places
In terms of first gigs - mine was Stevie Wonder - the bar was set.

My 'first' 'gig' was The Grumbleweeds at New Brighton's Floral Pavilion. Step down Madden.
15th July 1978 - Rock Against Racism Northern Carnival in Alexandra Park, Whalley Range. Steel Pulse, Buzzcocks, Exodus. I was 8 months old.
Not bad but not for me
I suspect it’s where I first developed my love of bass.
First one I actually remember was a free gig in Albert Square in 1986, headlined by none other than Wet Wet Wet.

I wasn't eight years old, I should say.

ELO (circa On the Third Day), Fairfield Hall, Croydon. I mean, you win.
Very good though that

Ofay at the Goodnight (Goodnite?) Club. You’ve all got a lot to answer for…
